The 1st Fifty Validation Fund will also draw on the experience of
the senior managers of the collaborating organizations to provide
strategic guidance and to advise of investment evaluation, decision-making
and deal structure.
David Cattey, Executive Director, Business Technology
Center - Mr. Cattey has served as Executive Director of the
BTC since 1990. In this capacity he has overseen the relocation
and expansion of the incubator from a 12,000 sq ft multi-floor
building to a modern 60,000 sq ft facility located on the OSU
Science and Technology Campus.
Mr. Cattey serves on the Board of Directors of the National Business
Incubation Association and is a frequent speaker at their national
conferences. He is also is a member of the Board of Trustees of
the Ohio Foundation for Entrepreneurial Education, the Board of
Trustees of the Industry and Technology Council of Central Ohio,
and the Board of Trustees of the National Environmental Incubator
at Central State University. He is the 1995 recipient of The Entrepreneur
of the Year Award in the Supporter of Entrepreneurship category.
Anthony J. Dennis, Ph.D., President, Edison Biotechnology
Center - After receiving B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in microbiology
from OSU, Dr. Dennis joined Battelle where he eventually became
vice president for biotechnology. He then served a two-year stint
as president of IntraCel, a biotech company operating in Geneva,
Switzerland, returning to the U.S. as vice president for research
and development at Tastemaker (now Givaudan, a division of Roche).
Dr. Dennis' entrepreneurial experience includes co-founding Nutri-Logics,
Inc., where he acted as president through two rounds of start-up
funding.
Dr. Dennis is expert in the area of innovation and creativity
in research, particularly as it applies to the development and
commercialization of new products. He is currently completing
a book that examines the key barriers to breakthrough innovation
including recommendations on how to surpass these barriers. As
the new president of EBTC, Dr. Dennis will lead its mission to
grow and develop life sciences companies and to foster a strong
business climate for expansion of the life sciences sector in
the State of Ohio.
John O. Huston, Principal, USPrivateCompanies, LLC
- During his 30-year banking career, Mr. Huston held positions
ranging from Chief Lending/Chief Credit Officer to CEO at five
banks in five states. Since retiring from banking in 2000, he
has been an advisor, conduit, columnist and frequent speaker in
his area of expertise…..optimizing a private company’s
capital structure. An active business angel, he provides equity
to entrepreneurs through his investment company, USPrivateCompanies,
LLC. Mr. Huston was also pivotal in the formation of the Ohio
TechAngel Fund and has been passionately engaged in the on-going
success of the Fund.
Mr. Huston was one of seven Ohioans appointed by Governor Taft
to the Ohio Venture Capital Authority, whose mission is to make
professionally managed early stage capital more readily available
to the state’s entrepreneurs. He has also taught Finance
at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business,
and is a frequent judge for business plan competitions at Ohio’s
colleges and universities. In addition to serving on several Advisory
Boards for his portfolio companies, Mr. Huston is an active member
of The Ohio Venture Association, OMERIS, the Columbus Technology
Council, and the Angel Capital Association (“The Professional
Alliance of Angel Groups”).
